HANGING ON THE PATIO AT THE NOB

OCTOBER 13, 2019

Our God

 Verse 1
Water You turned into wine
Opened the eyes of the blind
There's no one like You
None like You

Verse 2
Into the darkness You shine
Out of the ashes we rise
There's no one like You
None like You

Chorus
Our God is greater
Our God is stronger
God You are higher than any other
Our God is healer
Awesome in power our God our God

Bridge
And if our God is for us
Then who could ever stop us
And if our God is with us
Then what could stand against
And if our God is for us
Then who could ever stop us
And if our God is with us
Then what could stand against
(Then) what could stand against

The Lion And The Lamb

Verse 1
He's coming on the clouds
Kings and kingdoms will bow down
And every chain will break
As broken hearts declare His praise
For who can stop the Lord Almighty

Chorus
Our God is the Lion
The Lion of Judah
He's roaring with power
And fighting our battles
And every knee will bow before Him
Our God is the Lamb
The Lamb that was slain
For the sins of the world
His blood breaks the chains
And every knee will bow before the Lion and the Lamb
Every knee will bow before Him

Verse 2
So open up the gates
Make way before the King of kings
The God who comes to save
Is here to set the captives free
For who can stop the Lord Almighty

Bridge
Who can stop the Lord Almighty
Who can stop the Lord (Almighty)

Living Hope

Verse 1
How great the chasm that lay between us
How high the mountain I could not climb
In desperation I turned to heaven
And spoke Your name into the night
Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul
The work is finished the end is written
Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 2
Who could imagine so great a mercy
What heart could fathom such boundless grace
The God of ages stepped down from glory
To wear my sin and bear my shame
The cross has spoken I am forgiven
The King of kings calls me His own
Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever
Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus
Hallelujah praise the One who set me free
Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me
You have broken every chain
There’s salvation in Your name
Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 3
Then came the morning that sealed the promise
Your buried body began to breathe
Out of the silence the Roaring Lion
Declared the grave has no claim on me
(REPEAT)
Jesus Yours is the victory whoa

Ending
Jesus Christ my living hope
Oh God You are my living hope

Ain't No Grave

Verse 1
Shame is a prison as cruel as a grave
Shame is a robber and he’s come to take my name
Love is my redeemer lifting me up from the ground
Love is the power where my freedom song is found

Chorus 1
There ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down
There ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down
When I hear that trumpet sound
I’m gonna rise up out of the ground
There ain’t no grave gonna hold my body down

Verse 2
Fear is a liar with a smooth and velvet tongue
Fear is a tyrant he’s always telling me to run
Love is resurrection and love is a trumpet sound
Love is my weapon I’m gonna take my giants down

Verse 3
There was a battle a war between death and life
There on a tree the Lamb of God was crucified
He went on down to hell He took back every key
He rose up as a lion
Now He’s setting all the captives free

Chorus 2
There ain’t no grave could hold His body down
There ain’t no grave could hold His body down
When He heard the trumpet sound
He rose up out of the ground
There ain’t no grave could hold His body down
There ain’t no grave could hold His body down

Back to The Nob

TODAY AT HOB NOBS, APRIL 14
#OpenSpaces

GLORIOUS DAY
I was buried beneath my shame.
Who could carry that kind of weight?
It  was my tomb
'Til I met You

I was breathing, but not alive
All my failures I tried to hide
It was my tomb
'Til I met You

You called my name
Then I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day

Now Your mercy has saved my soul
Now Your freedom is all that I know
The old made new
Jesus, when I met You, whoa, what a day

When you called my name
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
Then I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day

I needed rescue
My sin was heavy
But chains break at the weight of Your glory
I needed shelter
I was an orphan
But You call me a citizen of Heaven
When I was broken
You were my healing
Now Your love is the air that I'm breathing
I have a future
My eyes are open

'Cause when you called my name
I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day
You called my name
And I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness
Into Your glorious day

In Christ Alone - F

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song
This Cornerstone, this solid Ground
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease
My Comforter, my All in All
Here in the love of Christ I stand.
In Christ alone! - who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe.
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live.
There in the ground His body lay,
Light of the world by darkness slain:
Then bursting forth in glorious day
Up from the grave He rose again
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,
For I am His and He is mine
Bought with the precious blood of Christ
No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me
From life's first cry to final breath,
Jesus commands my destiny
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand
Till He returns or calls me home
Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

From the Inside Out - C

A thousand times I've failed
Still Your mercy remains
And should I stumble again
I'm caught in Your grace
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
Your will above all else
My purpose remains
The art of losing myself
In bringing You praise
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
In my heart and my soul
Lord I give You control
Consume me from the inside out,
Lord, let justice and praise
Become my embrace
To love you from the inside out
Your will above all else
My purpose remains
The art of losing myself
In bringing You praise
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
In my heart and my soul
I give You control
Consume me from the inside out,
Lord, let justice and praise
Become my embrace
To love You from the inside out
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
And the cry of my heart
Is to bring You praise
From the inside out
Lord my soul cries out
In my heart and my soul
Lord I give you control
Consume me from the inside out,
Lord, let justice and praise
Become my embrace
To love You from the inside out
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
And the cry of my heart
Is to bring You praise
From the inside out
Lord my soul cries out
Everlasting
Your light will shine when all else fades
Never ending
Your glory goes beyond all fame
And the cry of my heart
Is to bring You praise
From the inside out
Lord my soul cries out
From the inside out
Lord my soul cries out

Session One : LTTC The Departure

THE DEPARTURE

The strangest part about this season of my life is that my intimacy with God has been directly tied to my connection with the Church.
VIDEO
Share session 1 from the Letters to the Church Video Series with your group. The video should be used at the beginning of your time together to introduce some of the concepts you will be discussing and to provide spiritual direction for the session.

DISCUSSION The experience many Christians in the West have today in their churches looks very different from what we read in the New Testament. It is a scary thought that this has somehow become okay with us. God desires faith in His people, and it grieves His heart when we live in a way that shows we don’t believe His promises and power are for us in the same way they were for the early church. The journey back to faithfulness won’t be a quick one, and this book does not contain any magic formula to get us to where we are supposed to be. Change is going to require dedication and humility. We will have to lay down some things, like our desires and traditions, but it will be more than worth it. God has so much more for the Church to experience. Hopefully this vision will take root in your heart and push you to take action and pursue it.

We are not here to "fix" the Church.  We are here to hear from God and choose our personal steps to make Him known in this (or your) community.

1. Consider the thought exercise presented in the first few sentences of Letters to the Church. Write down what you would understand church to be if the Bible was your only source of information. Compare that with your church experience. What are some discrepancies?

2. Reread the opening quotation:  The strangest part about this season of my life is that my intimacy with God has been directly tied to my connection with the Church.

#EVERYDAY

Acts 2:46 New International Version (NIV)
46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts,

#EveryDay is one of the five values we hold to for our work downtown.  How does it differ for me than before? I’m conscience of a time when Monday was dedicated to a triage from the last Sunday in staff meetings and review.  Then Tuesday and Wednesday were dedicated to prepping for Wednesday night’s rehearsal, secluded up in my office writing parts or connecting for personnel to the Worship coming up.  Thursday and Fridays were about the next Sunday.  I lived between Sundays with the next Sunday in my mind.  My life, and my ministry, seemed to live from Sunday to Sunday.  I don't describe it as wrong ... it was necessary for what we were doing.  I'm just describing something different today!
Now I can look at any and every day as a potential for including it in a strategy to reach this community.  Today I’m grading papers.  I woke up this morning knowing I’d take the time for these papers.  But I took the first half-hour this morning praying about where I’d spend my day.  I’ve been grading papers for over four hours (and I’m tired of grading papers)!  And, I’ve got 25 more assignments to go and I’m looking for a break.  BUT I’ve strategically placed myself at a neighborhood coffee house/cafe’ to work.  I’m not secluded.  I’ve had no less than five conversations with people I recognize.  One gal is a leader in conversation across America about Local First.  She’s leading conversations about communities and their impact.   Another conversation is discussing the patron sitting ten feet away who claims to be an analyst with the FBI on assignment.  Another conversation is calling Community Bridges to help find assistance for said “FBI agent”.  I’m guessing (and it’s just a guess) that she is neglecting her meds.  The police even noticed her behavior and called the Cafe’ to see if she was being disruptive inside.  But as I assist both the police and the barista to call Community Bridges, it validates our discussion on how every person is important to the Kingdom and validates our words in the mind of the barista that asked for my assistance in the first place.
#EveryDay isn’t just a type of branding and slogan.  We lean into it because we discovered how easy it is to compartmentalize our life to ‘church’ on Sundays and ‘everything else’ to the ‘everything else’ week.  But Christ doesn’t call us to that.  His death was worthy of purchasing all days of the week.  And therefore strategizing our lives such to spend each day with the over-arching concept that we can live for Him; in a coffee shop with the computer rather than an office; talking life and community. Always in a strategic presence to give a hope for the cause that is within us.

Book of ACTS LESSON 1

LESSON ONE ACTS 2:29-47
SITUATION
For almost two months, Jerusalem had been buzzing with plots, a headline crucifixion, rumors of a resurrection, transformed lives, visits from the risen Jesus, and his sudden departure to heaven. After Jesus left his followers gathered to pray in an upper room, and the Holy Spirit showed up! In the early-morning hours of Pentecost, a new sound was heard in the temple courts: Galileans speaking various languages, praising God in tongues other than their own. A crowd gathered. Conclusions were reached. Then one of the disciples stood up and spoke. Peter, the transformed fisherman who had betrayed his Lord, delivered the first sermon, explaining from Scripture who Jesus really was and why he died. The results were remarkable.

OBSERVATION Read Acts 2:29–47 from the NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION
29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30 But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. 32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. 34 For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,  “ ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 35 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” ’  36 “Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.” 37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (My emphasis)

INSPIRATION
A transformed group stood beside a transformed Peter as he announced some weeks later: “So, all the people of Israel should know this truly: God has made Jesus—the man you nailed to the cross—both Lord and Christ.” No timidity in his words. No reluctance. About three thousand people believed his message. The apostles sparked a movement. The people became followers of the death-conqueror. They couldn’t hear enough or say enough about him . . . Christ was their model, their message. They preached “Jesus Christ and him crucified,” not for the lack of another topic, but because they couldn’t exhaust this one. What unlocked the doors of the apostles’ hearts? Simple. They saw Jesus. They encountered the Christ. Their sins collided with their Savior and their Savior won! A lot of things would happen to them over the next few decades. Many nights would be spent away from home. Hunger would gnaw at their bellies. Rain would soak their skin. Stones would bruise their bodies. Shipwrecks, lashings, martyrdom. But there was a scene in the repertoire of memories that caused them to never look back: the betrayed coming back to find his betrayers; not to scourge them, but to send them. Not to criticize them for forgetting, but to commission them to remember. Remember that he who was dead is alive and they who were guilty have been forgiven. (From Six Hours One Friday by Max Lucado.)

12. How can you use your gifts to help bring others into God’s kingdom? [Your Response Here]

LIFE LESSONS
Authentic followers of Jesus always have company. In fact, if we feel all alone in our faith, one of the explanations may be that we’re not following Jesus as closely as we think we are. The first disciples went from feeling all alone to speaking out and discovering more than 3,000 new companions. The practice of faith involves others. So make it a point to pursue healthy relationships with other believers. Ask Jesus to change you into an agent of peace in every situation you find yourself in. Ask him to make you into good company.

DEVOTION
Father, we invite the powerful indwelling of your Spirit, because we know that we do not have the power to change ourselves. May we be open to your convicting work. May we be sincere and willing to grow as you lead us. Father, transform us into your likeness.

JOURNALING
In what area of your life have you resisted the Spirit’s work? How can you change that attitude?
